Directions to NEM generators – June 2022 Supplementary Report

Between 10 June 2022 and 23 June 2022, AEMO issued a series of directions to maintain the power system in a reliable operating state. A confluence of high commodity prices, domestic market price caps, planned and unplanned outages of schedule generating plant, low output from semi-scheduled generation, and high winter demand conditions led to unprecedented challenges operating the National Electricity Market (NEM) and the need for directions. 

Where the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) intervenes in the National Electricity Market (NEM) through the use of directions, AEMO must publish a report in accordance with National Electricity Rules (NER) clauses 4.8.9(f) and 3.13.6A. 

AEMO published a report in August 2022 that addressed clause 3.13.6A(a) relating to the circumstances and the system and market consequences of these directions. This is a supplementary report covering the compensation reporting requirements specified in NER 3.13.6A(b). 

The NEM Event reports below satisfy those NER obligations and are based on information available to AEMO at the time of publication:

In accordance with NER Clause 3.15.7B (c)(1), AEMO is required to appoint an Independent Expert to assess and determine the additional compensation claims for the Directed participant that exceeds the $20,000 threshold and exceeds the $100,000 aggregate threshold.
