Operational demand data
Operational Demand in a region is demand that is met by local scheduled generating units, semi-scheduled generating units, and non-scheduled intermittent generating units of aggregate capacity ≥ 30 MW, and by generation imports to the region and by Wholesale Demand Response. It excludes the demand met by non-scheduled non-intermittent generating units, non-scheduled intermittent generating units of aggregate capacity < 30 MW, exempt generation (e.g. rooftop solar, gas tri-generation, very small wind farms, etc), and demand of local scheduled loads.
Significant Non-Scheduled Generation (SNSG) in a region is the non-scheduled intermittent generating units of aggregate capacity ≥ 30 MW including some exceptions.
Operational Demand less SNSG in a region is Operational Demand excluding the contribution from Significant Non-Scheduled Generation. This demand definition is consistent with the forecast demand in the Pre-Dispatch (PD) and Short Term (ST) Projected Assessment of System Adequacy (PASA).
Please see Demand Terms in EMMS Data Model for more detail on the Operational Demand definition, and for the list of SNSG exceptions that are included.
Operational Demand data is published via the Data Interchange through the following fields described in the EMMS Data Model:
EMMS Data Model Table | Field name | Description |
DEMANDOPERATIONALACTUAL | OPERATIONAL_DEMAND | Average 30-minute measured operational demand MW value (unadjusted and not reconstituted with estimated actual WDR). This value is updated in real-time immediately after the 30-minute interval, and may be updated manually after the event to resolve identified SCADA data or IT issues. |
DEMANDOPERATIONALACTUAL | OPERATIONAL_DEMAND_ADJUSTMENT | Adjustment value containing the estimated amount of activated RERT and AEMO directions such as involuntary load shedding. This value is updated as soon as practicable after the event, due to the manual nature of the adjustments. |
DEMANDOPERATIONALACTUAL | WDR_ESTIMATE | Estimated average 30-minute MW amount of Wholesale Demand Response that occurred. This value is updated in real-time immediately after the 30-minute interval, and may be updated manually after the event to resolve identified SCADA data or IT issues. |
DEMANDOPERATIONALFORECAST | OPERATIONAL_DEMAND_POE10 | 10% probability of exceedance operational demand forecast value |
DEMANDOPERATIONALFORECAST | OPERATIONAL_DEMAND_POE50 | 50% probability of exceedance operational demand forecast value |
DEMANDOPERATIONALFORECAST | OPERATIONAL_DEMAND_POE90 | 90% probability of exceedance operational demand forecast value |
For the purpose of calculating the “Actual Demand” referenced in the Retailer Reliability Obligation (RRO) described by the Reliability Forecast Guidelines:
RRO Actual Demand = OPERATIONAL_DEMAND + OPERATIONAL_DEMAND_ADJUSTMENT
where OPERATIONAL_DEMAND and OPERATIONAL_DEMAND_ADJUSTMENT can be obtained from the latest file available from this location. This file contains five-minute trading interval resolution values for the last 12 months, which are linearly interpolated from the half-hourly values.
Underlying demand in a region is the estimated total of electricity consumption defined as operational demand plus rooftop PV generation.
Operational demand data files
Half-hourly Actual Operational Demand
- filename: public_actual_operational_demand_hh*.csv
This file contains the historical operational demand fields from the DEMANDOPERATIONALACTUAL table by region for the previous half-hourly interval.
Five-minute Actual Operational Demand
filename: public_actual_operational_demand_5min*.csv
This file contains the historical operational demand fields from the DEMANDOPERATIONALACTUAL table, by region covering all five-minute intervals of the previous 12 months. These five-minute values are linearly interpolated from the half-hourly values.
Daily Actual Operational Demand
filename: public_actual_operational_demand_daily*.csv
This file contains the historical operational demand fields from the DEMANDOPERATIONALACTUAL table, by region covering all half-hourly intervals of the previous trading day.
Daily Actual Operational Demand Update
filename: public_actual_operational_demand_update*.csv
This file is published when there is a retroactive change made by AEMO to the actual operational demand data record (for example: due to SCADA data quality) or to the operational demand adjustment value. Data published here overrides the original data published in real-time (Half-hourly Actual Operational Demand and Daily Actual Operational Demand files) for the same half-hourly interval.
Half-hourly Forecast Operational Demand
filename: public_forecast_operational_demand_hh*.csv
This file contains the half-hourly forecast operational demand fields from the DEMANDOPERATIONALFORECAST table, by region covering the pre-dispatch and ST PASA timeframe.
Operational demand by area data files
Operational demand data is also published for the individual areas that are used in preparing the load forecasts for pre-dispatch and STPASA. These load forecasting areas are defined in the SO_OP_3710 – Load Forecasting procedure.
Half-hourly Actual Operational Demand by Area
filename: public_actual_operational_demand_hh_area*.csv
This file contains historical operational demand fields similar to the DEMANDOPERATIONALACTUAL table for the previous half-hourly interval, however it is split by load forecasting area instead of by region.
Daily Actual Operational Demand by Area
filename: public_actual_operational_demand_daily_area*.csv
This file contains historical operational demand fields similar to the DEMANDOPERATIONALACTUAL table covering all half-hourly intervals of the previous trading day, however it is split by load forecasting area instead of by region.
Daily Actual Operational Demand Update by Area
filename: public_actual_operational_demand_update_area*.csv
This file is published when there is a retroactive change made by AEMO to the actual operational demand data record by area (for example: due to SCADA data quality) or to the operational demand adjustment value by area. Data published here overrides the original data published in real-time (Half-hourly Actual Operational Demand and Daily Actual Operational Demand files by area) for the same half-hourly interval.
Half-hourly Forecast Operational Demand by Area
filename: public_forecast_operational_demand_hh_area*.csv
This file contains half-hourly forecast operational demand fields similar to the DEMANDOPERATIONALFORECAST table covering the pre-dispatch and ST PASA timeframe, however it is split by load forecasting area instead of by region.
Operational demand less SNSG data files
Half-hourly Actual Operational Demand less SNSG
filename: public_actual_operational_dem_less_snsg_hh*.csv
This file contains historical operational demand fields similar to the DEMANDOPERATIONALACTUAL table for the previous half-hourly interval by region with the significant non-scheduled generation subtracted from the operational demand.
Daily Actual Operational Demand less SNSG
filename: public_actual_operational_dem_less_snsg_daily*.csv
This file contains historical operational demand fields similar to the DEMANDOPERATIONALACTUAL table covering all half-hourly intervals of the previous trading day by region with the significant non-scheduled generation subtracted from the operational demand.
Daily Actual Operational Demand less SNSG Update
filename: public_actual_operational_dem_less_snsg_update*.csv
This file is published when there is a retroactive change made by AEMO to the actual operational demand less SNSG data record (for example: due to SCADA data quality) or to the operational demand less SNSG adjustment value. Data published here overrides the original data published in real-time (Half-hourly Actual Operational Demand less SNSG and Daily Actual Operational Demand less SNSG files) for the same half-hourly interval.
